immortalje: Fawkes looking at Harry Potter ([hp] harryfawkes)
[personal profile] immortalje
As part of coming back to dreamwidth, I figured a new facelift for this journal (and [community profile] love_sacrificed) is in order. It's been over a year since I really looked at any of my journals. Be it here or at livejournal or at insanejournal.

Even longer since I did anything but moderate one of my contest communities or post a batch of icons. To be honest: towards the end I was stressing myself more with this than anything else. I took a step back as I undertook some major changes in my life (new job, new city) and it took longer than I expected. However, I think I needed that time away.

It's not as if it was time away from fandom. Even in the past year, I read tons of fanfiction and I wrote quite a bit. On paper. I've got a huge box filled with paper of all sizes just waiting to be typed up. I think I need a secretary. Or at least a house elf (who can then go on to cleaning my place). At least I've presorted it by now.

There's a small pile of Criminal Minds, a small pile of Star Trek, a small pile of Marvel, a slightly bigger pile of Crossovers. There are a handful of note sized papers for various other fandoms. And then there's the (comparatively) huge pile of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Right. I know which fandom has me firmly in its grip. Aside from that I have various types of notebooks that are partially filled with more stories that I'm going to ignore until I have all the loose papers typed up. Whenever that is going to be.

I probably shouldn't mention the A4 folder I still have from my school/university days where I have really old stories that are waiting to be typed up. I remember doing that once... only to loose at least one document containing what used to be 6-10 pages (both sides, small writing) of handwritten notes. That was very motivational. Not.

I'm not sure if there's anything beyond beginnings though. Maybe a couple of one shots here and there that need to be fleshed out. Otherwise I'm just setting things up (at times the same thing over and over again in various forms) and when the real plot should start - bang. The muse stops. I've got the world, why would anyone do anything important in it? Why not leave things at status quo?

There are several stories featuring manipulative (but well meaning) to evil Dumbledores, Weasleys and so on. Harry finds out all about that heartbreaking truth and when it comes to acting on that information? It's a blank. I kind of don't see him running amok because of it. Although that might make a good crack fic. I'm not sure if I would write or post that though. The current climate kind of makes it unfunny.

Anyway, I've also started on updating my icons and I think this won't be the end of it.

I love the new layout.

I'm happy you're back from your break and feeling more refreshed. I certainly felt much better after mine.

If I had a house elf I'd be too busy having him cook and clean than dealing with all my handwritten fics that still need typing but I have a huge collection of notebooks and papers dating back to the late 90's of fics that I've never typed up and that are probably terrible. I'd deal with it myself and let the house elf fetch me tea and maybe if they can travel far enough send them to Epcot's Germany area for some paprika chips because I've been craving them ad didn't get them last time I went because we ate in the more expensive beer garden which sadly does not serve the same stuff as the stall next door. But I'm going again on the 12th so I'll get my tasty chips then.

I love the writing advice I got to visualize a story like a tv series and then plan them out with each "Episode" representing one chapter it kind of helped me with my difficulty because I hate outlining but I still tend towards one shots and drabbles because I can get straight to the idea in my head and I don't have to slowly get there. I sadly do have a longer story to work on because I've been encouraged to expand a Fitzsimmons drabble I wrote into a longer fic and I do kind of want to explore the au I set up.

Oooh manipulative but well meaning Dumblefore and Weasleys? those are my favorite fics. Hmm I tend to prefer the ones where he gradually distances himself from them and makes new more loyal friends rather than ones where he totally runs amok.... One of my favorite fic involves a post POA au fic where Sirius takes control of politics, frees himself and runs into a well meaning but not evil Dumbledore. It's one of the best fics I ever read but it's very long. I remember that the author name features cats and cool. I shall look it up once I've hit post on this long Dani babble comment.

I never leave fanfic reading behind even when I go on internet vacations... That does remind me I want to work on making a fic rec list for a tumblr thing on Wednesday I better start posting links to what I read. People share what fics they read that week every Wednesday. My names even shown up a few times in people's lists.

I enjoy reading Marvel but with the exception of Agents Of Shield I'll never write in it because comic book canon is kind of intimidating. Even more than Star Trek where they assume that everyone must know this casual fact that was mentioned once in one episode/issue/book.

Whether or not I type things up can be summed up in whether or not I type it up right away before I reach the everything I write is crap phase. Otherwise I look at my old ficlets and cringe because everything is awful.

The advice was part of an article giving advice for people that want to plot things out but can't do full outlines. If I outline a fic entirely, I'll never write it because I've already told myself the story. But writing out the basic idea and then a two sentence synopsis of what is happening in that arc seems to give me the planning a long story needs without going into the well I just wrote a six page outline about what's going to happen and now i don't need to write the story mode.

Me too. I love all flavors of Dumbledore, Snape is another one where you can have a lot of fun with motivations for. I still have a weakspot for some of the fics that could be classified as bashing including one that "bashes" Hermione.

But yeah I couldn't get into Torchwood fic as much as I would have liked because of the bashing of Gwen and it wasn't just of the I'm going to emphasize these canon traits over these other canon traits because I want to explore and more of an I hate this character so they are an evil vapid idiot who doesn't do anything useful.

I may one day actually post the essay I want to write about fanon, canon and why I love reading and writing Snape despite having an Anti Snape tag on my tumblr... Most of the anti posts having to do with the people that act like Snape was innocent and the Mauraders were all bad and that Harry was the one in the wrong for being born.

I haven't gotten much hate from Star Trek for posting my drabbles but I start each one with a simple I still have not fully seen the Original Series despite buying it all on dvd. I also mostly just post silly simple Kirk/Spock fics.

I didn't get into Pottermore either. I've ignored everything JK has said about canon that isn't in the book. As I've never been a big believer in the if it's explained on twitter and an interview it's canon.

^_^ I love when you realize you've done the same different concept a whole bunch of ways or when you find an old work of yours and you don't even realize you wrote it.

Yay! I miss having a corner of fandom where things are sane. I'm definitely remembering why I preferred journal communities.

I've always just ignored everything but the books. But I love the fact that everyone ignore the names JK gave Harry's grandparents years after a look at the black family tree had caused people to assume that they were Charlus and Dorea Potter. Plus the names are rather meh. although no wonder they gave their kid a normal name!

^_^ I had started it years ago but then the author quit writing for a while and I quit reading Harry Potter stories for a while and then I started rereading it just as she was working on the finishing chapters...

And it's probably one of my favorites.
